WHY A DEADLINE

The Someday trap.

A goal set months away is easy to push back.

Most procrastination isn’t laziness. It’s a deadline too far away.

THE RESEARCH

A 2005 study of when students studied for exams found:

“Only when the deadline is close are people likely to work.”

König & Kleinmann, 2005 · The Journal of Psychology · Read the study ›

Shortyear keeps a deadline close: today, this week, this cycle.

THREE FINISH LINES

A deadline that’s never far away.

Every day, every week and every 12 weeks end with a line you can see from where you are.

EVERY DAY

Day done.

✓Morning run, 5K

Today’s tasks.

Today shows what’s due today. Tick it off, or move it to another day of the same week.

EVERY WEEK

88% 7 of 8 tasks done

Target 85%

A score, and a review.

Your score is the share of planned tasks you did. The target is 85%. On the last day, a 3-question review.

EVERY CYCLE

Cycle 1 is complete.

10 of 12 weeks past the line.

12 weeks, then week 13.

After 12 weeks, week 13 is for looking back and setting up the next cycle.

HOW IT WORKS

From a 3-year vision to today’s tasks.

Shortyear turns your goals into a 12-week plan, with tasks for each day and a score for each week.

  1. 01VISION

Where you want to be in 3 years.

Write it once. It stays at the top of your profile, and every new cycle starts from it.

  2. 02GOALS

1 to 3 goals for the next 12 weeks.

Each one is a main quest or a side quest. Not sure where to start? Pick from 46+ ready-made side quests.

  3. 03TACTICS

    Plan once.

Add the actions you’ll repeat, and Shortyear writes the tasks for all 12 weeks.¹ You decide at the start. After that, you just act.

  4. 04TODAY

    Tick what you did.

Today shows what’s due. Missed something? Move it to another day of the same week, or skip it.²

  5. 05WEEK

    Aim for 85%, not 100%.

Your score is the share of planned tasks you actually did. The target leaves room for a bad day, not for a lost week.³

  6. 06FOCUS

    Time your sessions.

Start a focus session from any task: deep work, learning, a workout. Lock your phone: the timer stays on your lock screen.

Built for the week that goes wrong.

Every plan feels easy in week 1. Shortyear is made for the week you fall behind.

The shape of a 12-week cycle, as Shortyear reads it. A model of how change feels, not a measurement of your weeks.
Last day of the week: Catch up 2 and your week is back at 85%, with the 3 tasks to catch up, each with Move and Skip

A way back.

Fall behind and Today shows what’s left from earlier in the week, and until when. On the last day, it tells you what it takes: “Catch up 2 and your week is back at 85%.”

THE RESEARCH

Why it’s built this way.

Shortyear is built on 6 techniques that researchers have tested. Here is what they found.

1

Clear, challenging goals beat “do your best.”

In ShortyearEvery goal has a number to reach or a clear finish line. Number goals get a line that shows where you should be today.

What the study found

Across decades of goal-setting studies, people given a specific, challenging goal performed better than people told to do their best. A 2017 review of randomized trials with 16,523 people found that setting goals changes behavior, more so when the goals are hard and shared with others.

Epton, Currie & Armitage, 2017 · Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology · Read the study ›

2

Tracking your progress helps you reach your goal.

In ShortyearYou tick what you did each day, and each week ends with a score. You can send it to a review partner.

What the study found

Across 138 experiments with 19,951 people, those prompted to monitor their progress reached more of their goals. The effect was stronger when progress was physically recorded, and when it was reported to others.

Harkin et al., 2016 · Psychological Bulletin · Read the study ›

3

One missed day doesn’t undo your progress.

In ShortyearThe weekly target is 85%, not 100%. 2 skips per cycle save your streak on the days you miss, and days off you plan ahead don’t count.

What the study found

In a 12-week study of 82 people repeating a daily action, missing it once had little effect on how automatic it became. The time it took varied widely: from 18 days to an estimated 254.

Lally et al., 2010 · European Journal of Social Psychology · Read the study ›

4

Decide now what you’ll do when it gets hard.

In ShortyearEach action has its days. And under “If it gets hard,” every obstacle you name gets its plan.

What the study found

Plans written as “if this happens, then I’ll do that” have been tested in hundreds of experiments: 94 in a 2006 review, 642 in a 2025 one. They help people act on their goals, and work best in that exact if-then form.

Sheeran, Listrom & Gollwitzer, 2025 · European Review of Social Psychology · Read the study ›

5

Know why, see the obstacle, then plan.

In ShortyearFor each goal, you write why it matters and what could get in the way. When a week falls short, your why comes back in your review.

What the study found

Picture what you want, then what stands in the way, then make an if-then plan. Across 21 studies with 15,907 people, this sequence helped people reach their goals, with a small to medium effect.

Wang, Wang & Gai, 2021 · Frontiers in Psychology · Read the study ›

6

Fresh starts make it easier to begin.

In ShortyearEvery 13 weeks, a new cycle. You start again with what you learned.

What the study found

In 3 field studies, people searched for “diet,” went to the gym and committed to goals more often just after a new beginning: a new week, month or year, a birthday, a holiday.

Dai, Milkman & Riis, 2014 · Management Science · Read the study ›

These studies tested the techniques, not Shortyear. They explain why the app works the way it does, not what it will do for you. That’s what the 9 free days are for.

WEEK 12

Keep what you finish.

Reach a main quest and you keep a crystal piece engraved with its name. Finish a side quest and you earn bronze, silver or gold.

Hold 85% over the 12 weeks without reaching the goal, and you still earn a Finisher piece. Every set stays on your Showcase shelf.

10 of 12 weeks past the line. 3 pieces.

Real set from the app. Sample cycle.

WEEK 13

Look back. Start again.

After week 12, a week to reflect: what you finished, what you carry over, what the next cycle is for. 12 weeks of work and 1 to look back: a new start every quarter.⁶

Questions

I’ve quit every planner I’ve tried. Why would this be different?

A plan that expects perfect weeks breaks at the first bad one. Shortyear expects bad weeks: a target of 85%, not 100%, a way back when you fall behind, days off that don’t count, and a new start every 13 weeks. And you don’t have to take our word for it: on the yearly plan, the first 9 days are free.

Who is Shortyear for?

For ambitious people with a job and a goal on the side, who keep starting and never finish. A business to launch, money to save, a body to get in shape. If your goals keep sliding to “someday,” Shortyear gives each one a 12-week deadline.

Why not a notebook or a spreadsheet?

If a notebook works for you, keep it. Shortyear does what a notebook can’t: it writes the tasks for all 12 weeks, counts your score, reminds you in the evening, times your focus on your lock screen, and on the last day of the week, tells you what gets you back to 85%.

Why 1 to 3 goals?

So each one gets real work every week. You can add more. Shortyear will tell you it’s a lot, but it won’t stop you.

What if I miss a day, or a whole week?

A missed task can move to another day of the same week. Miss a whole day, and your streak doesn’t break: you get 2 skips per 12-week cycle, each one saves your streak for a day you missed. Days off you plan ahead don’t count in your score. And every week gets its own score, so the next one starts clean.

What happens after the free trial?

The free trial comes with the yearly plan. When it ends, your plan starts at $35 a year. The day before, a notification reminds you your plan starts tomorrow. Cancel anytime in Google Play, and you keep access until the end of the period you paid for.

Is there an iPhone version?

Shortyear starts on Android. iPhone comes next. Tap “On iPhone?” under the Google Play button, leave your email, and you’ll get 1 email when it’s ready.
